INFLUENCE OF “PLUS FOURS” The story of a voung Englishman who came to the Dominion in October last, and since then has been running about from place to place getting into ! debt and out of jobs, was told by Chief Detective Ward in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when William Peter ' Ellis-Groom appeared on the charge ot ; being idle and disorderly, and having insufficient means of support. Chief Detective Ward said that the accused was employed at a farm in Hawera until February, but after that liis conduct had not been at all satisfactory. . At Hawera, Wanganui, and New Plymouth he stayed at leading ; hotels, but never thought of paying his bills when leaving. Attired in golfing ! clothes with a golfing bag over his shoulder, the accused would visit the best hotels in smart plus .fours, with th? result that he experienced no difficulty in securing accommodation. Of late, however, accused had been forced to camp out at night on the hills of Karori. . Accused was convicted by Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within twelve months.
