TRENTHAM RACES 53J5RD DAY’S EVENTS

(By '

"The Watcher.")

Heavy rain fell oft Thursday night, and the tracks at Trentham will be heavy for the concluding day’s racing of the Wellington winter meeting today. With Trentham, however, a really sloppy track is easier on the horses than a half-dry one, where the turf is in a condition like putty, and it is possible that to-day several horses will run much better than they have done on the two previous days in ths holding going. On the whole, however, form at the meeting should not be disregarded. At the time of writing the weather outlook is still doubtful. The fields numerically are strong and quality is well represented, so that there should be some first-class racing. A frequent train service will be run from Lambton from 9.35 a.m. to 10.25 a.m., with additional ordinary timetable trains. The first race will start about 11.30.

IUCIC IS CI “ hack hurdles. Form points to good races coming from Sayonara and Potoanni, while Tinohoro. has twice run prominently when his bracketed companion, Wedding March, has been the winner, and he appears to be a very useful second string. NOVICE HANDICAP. Six furlongs. Paddon M 2 Mister Gamp 9 7 Waterlow 9 12 Mint Julep ... 9 0 Volhynia 9 9 Gold Girl 9 0 On form Paddon will have plenty of supporters in the Novice Handicap, while Mister Gamp and Waterlow have also run well at the meeting.

whose previous running suggests that they should be prominent are: Captain Gazeley, Our Jack, Nucleus, Braeman and Town Crier. It looks as if this might be a tricky race for backers with so many possessing good chan-

ces, and a fresh horse in Ardfinnan has been doing very good work on the tracks, while Dcnmure may improve.

Lucullent .... 9 8 The performance of Comical in the Highweight Handicap may result of him being installed favourite for the Winter 'Hurdles. He should run a great race, but there is just the possibility that his preparation has been insufficient for a race of this description, for he will not have things all his own way by any means. There are several good stayers and thoroughly seasoned jumpers in the race likely to test him to the utmost. Two of them are Black Cruiser and San Fera, while Lucullent must run well, for he goes through the ground so well and stays on solidly. Brigadier Bill likes the going and'he may see the journey out, but the class may be a little too strong for him. Crown Coin was finishing at a great rate in the Highweight Handicap. He has been disappointing since he won at Wanganui, and it is possible that he is just coming right again after going off temporarily at the Auckland Meeting. Crown Coin is thorough seasoned and a great stayer, who niay run extremely well. Cureaform on her running the past two davs is hardly herself, and while her bracketed mate Wedding March must be respected as a very promising hurdler, it is asking a lot of him to win a race of this description with so little experience. Landbird may prefer the steeplechase and Nukumai is not likely to be a starter unless present intentions are altered. Comical looks certain to perform well, but in the middle of the handicaps Black Cruiser and San Fera may trouble him while the lightly-weighted stayers, Lucullent and Crown Coin may go as well as anything.

On form it is difficult to pass over the topweights in the Winter Oats. Glenross and Passionate look like being well to the fore, and Olympic should be prominent. Titaness ran a respectable fourth the first day, and Sir Moment may possibly run a good mile. He came well into third place on Thursday from a good way back, but, of. course, the class to-day is very different.

ana lYiasiur fell in the Wellington Steeplechase when going well, and the lastnamed had shown sufficient form to suggest that he would have taken a hand in the finish had he stood up. They should both go well again to-day in the July Steeplechase. Sturdee, if started, must run prominently, and Highway, if he repeats his first day’s form, when he finished fourth, may be on hand.

rorm in tne open sprint cue sewuu day was so much astray that there may be another surprise in store iti the Onslow Handicap. Master Doon is apparently showing improved form, and there is nothing likely to improve more than Archeen. He came on at least half a stone on Thursday as tjie result of his race the first day, and he looks like running well forward this afternoon, while the extra moisture in the going will suit Beaumont.

furlong Hack Race is likely to affect the form, as one or two runners gave up a hopeless chase and were not knocked about fruitlessly. Girriebillie may do better by getting away on terms with his field, and the two topweights, Pinon and Highflown, may show up.

NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “The Watcher.”) Jockeys R. Reed and T. Green will leave for Sydney next week. Nijata, Highway, Little River and Greekson have been scratched for their engagement in the Winter Hurdles this afternoon. ■ The scratching of Ngata in the Winter Hurdles leaves A. McDonald free to ride Comical. Passionate has run two creditable races at the meeting. On neither of the two days has he got away well and with a little better luck at the

barrier be may be closer at tbe -finish to-day. Wedding March is much above tbe average hack hurdler and with experience should develop into a topnotcher. He is in tbe Winter Hurdles to-day oil the minimum, and must be ranked amongst the possibilities. Landbird who accepted for tbe July steeplechase to-day is also in the Winter Hurdles. Last year Penury Rose won the Trentham Hurdles and then ran third in the Winter Hurdles, being a bit unlucky that he did not finish closer. Brigadier Bill is attempting the same double this vear and as he has been preferred to Ngata he will receive support. , There were one or two runners solidle backed on Thursday as against long odds the .first day. In one case the horse advanced from eighteenth position in the order of betting to third but the money was left in the machine although there was a decided improvement in form. In another instance also the judgment of the connections of the horse was faulty. Kilia showed poor form in his two races and was not paid up for to-day in the Winter Oats. It is not often that handicappers express such a decided opinion about a winner as Mr. Covle did on Ruffles. He raised him 2-lib. for winning on Thursday. Ruffles did not accept. H. li.' Ryder and R. McTavish were each fined £1 and T. Green 10s. on Thursday for not returning to the ■weighing room after the Seatoun Handicap. " Late arrival in the birdcage cost the connections of Ruffles and Red Courier £1 each in the Petonc Handicap- . . Jubilance who paid a big dividend on Thursday could hardly have been expected to score on form although the forward running of Master Doon in the open sprint gave her a chance as she had been doing all her track work with him. Jubilance has not been many weeks in work after a long spell' due to getting badly cut up in a wire fence. She still sports an ugly hock as a result of the accident and her owner-trainer was by no means. sure that she would stand a preparation. She had a race at Otaki last month and that was her only start this season prior to Thursday’s race. Mr. F. Jensen, the owner of Birkenella, the winner of the Wellington Steeplechase, entertained the Press Gallery at Trentham on Thursday to celebrate the victory. The chairman of the gallery (Mr. A. V. O’Brien) expressed the pleasure of the local and visiting sporting writers at the success of such a fine jumper as Birkcnella, and hoped that it would prove but the forerunner to a National. Mr. Jensen, in returning thanks, said that he loved a good jumper, and would sooner win a Wellington Steeplechase than a Gold Cup. Birkeuella’s win had not exactly been confidently anticipated, but it had nevertheless 'given him great pleasure to own a horse capable of winning an event of that class amongst steeplechasers. Both hack steeplechases at 'Trentham this week went to the Feilding stable of L. Knapp, who has also bad great success this winter with Puwhero. Nothing jumped better at Trentham on Tuesday than lionmark, his display being as good as anything shown by the runners in the Wellington Steeplechase. The race evidently knocked him a little, however, as he did not run so well on Thursday. If the time in the seven-furlong race won by Sir Moment on Tuesday (Imin. •33SC-C.) is correct, he would have been hard to beat in the open mile won by Rapier, which took Imin. 52}sec. Sir Moment is in the open mile this afternoon. Trentham trained horses have had 28 starts in the two days of the Wellington meeting so far, and the dividends total just under £5l. Lady Ben, who is down to run in the Winter Oats to-day,. won the race three years ago. She lias not raced since the Masterton Cup in October last. Our Jack was a well-backed runner in the Iligh-weight Handicap on Thursday. He lost a good deal of ground on the leaders in the early stages, and was never likely to get up. He has taken on a more moderate class of opponent to-dav, and the support accorded him on Thursday may be an indication of bis chances amongst the hacks. Valhynia, who is racing at 'Trentham this week, is a five-year-old half-brother by Kilbroney to Sasanof. He did some racing in Victoria without success, which was generally credited to unsoundness, and his present trainer R. Hatch may be able to do something with 'him. In to-dav's advertising .columns intending race patrons will find the Railwav Department's time-fable setting out race trains between Wellington and Trentham for tbe third dav’s race meeting held at Trentham. A liberal timetable. commencing at 9.35 a.m., is provided.
