VICE-REGAL-Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Alice Eergusson will be present at the ladies’ evening of the Wellington Savage Club this eventag iu the Town Hall. On Wednesday, July 21, Their Excellencies will go by train to Palmerston North, where the Governor-General will perform the opening ceremony of the new Girls’ Flock House. They, will return to Wellington the same day. Tlie Hon. Sir F. W. Lang, M.L.C., left for the north by the afternoon express yesjerday. Messrs. A. M. Samuels, W. H. Parry and W. J- lordan, M.P.’s, leave for the north by the Limited express tins evening. Mr. H. W. Uru, M.P., returned to Wellington from Te Kuiti yesterday evening. Sir James Carroll, M.L.C., has almost completely recovered from his recent illness. He was able to attend the races at Trentham on Tuesday. The death occurred suddenly at Martinborough on July 3 of Mr. Charles Edwin Brewer, at the age of 76. The deceased was boro at Hatchhorn, England, and arrived at Auckland by the sailing ship Merchantman in 1854. Sir George Grey was a passenger by the same boat. Mr. Biewci s family settled in Auckland, his father being Collector of Customs for many vears. The late Air. Brewer was educated at the Auckland Grammar School and subsequently took up farming at Waverlev with his brother, the late Air. William Brewer. Afterwards Mr. Brewer took up farming near Alartinborough, where he retired about two vears ago. He owned several racehorses, including Folly, which won the Taranaki Cup over fifty years ago, and later raced Sir Lethe with much success. Mr. Brewer gave generously to all departments of sports, and. during his time occupied many positions in racing bodies. Tie leaves a widow and a grown-up family, comprising Airs. Gibb Brown (of Palmerston North), Airs. Percy Hamilton (of Gisborne). Mrs. nick Brown (of Te Puke) , Mr. Edwin Brewer (of Feildingb and Air. Bernard Brewer (of Te Kuiti). The interment took place at ATartinhorcragh on Monday and was largely attended.
