THE HUTT ROAD

POSSIBILITY OF A BIG SLIP

Councillor R. Semple stated at tbe Citv Council on Wednesday that a stone had fallen • from the hillside on the Hutt Road and done some damage to a motor lorry. He mentioned the matter because the point in question was on the “creep.” Fortunately when the last slip occurred on the Hutt Road it happened in the early hours of tbe morning, but if another slip occurred in the daytime or up to midnight, the public might not escape. Could not something be done? he asked. Tbe whole thing was on a “greasy back,” and it was only a matter of time when it would come down. Tbe Mayor said that tbe matter had been reported upon by the city engineer some time back. He reported on tbe possibility of a slip, so that, so far as that was concerned, tbe engineer had done his duty. As. there was a possibility of the slip being a big one, he thought the Railway Department would be interested. They had instructed their engineers to go over it. They reported that there was a crack, but that the slip was not likely to interfere with them. As the point affected was where the railway deviation was to go into the hill, the responsible head of the department had been approached to see whether thev could not do something jointly, and save trouble by proceeding with the work. To cure it by removal would involve a huge expense. However, the matter had not been lost sight of; in any case, it would not be the fault of the engineers if anything
