The Mildred Elaine Smyth Divorce Bill was reported in the Legislative Council as not having complied with the Standing Orders in regard to. advertising, and was referred to the joint Committee on Standing Orders on Private Bills for report. The Roman Catholic Archbishop Empowering Bill was reported to the Legislative Council as having complied with the Standing Orders, and was read a first time. "I don’t know what the girls and women of the present day are coming to,” remarked a Napier resident, of pious inclinations. to a “Daily Telegraph” reporter. It was bad enough when one saw them powdering their faces in the theatres or restaurants,' he continued, “but when it comes to applying firstaid to the face in a place of worship, then it’s about time something was dene.” It appears that tho resident went, as was his usual custom on Sunday evenings, to church, and during the service was scandalised to observe a woman member of the congregation calmly take out of her bag a small mirror and powder puff, and proceed to decorate her face in the most approved fashion. "It was during the most solemn part of the service, too,” ho concluded. What might have been a serious accident was narrowly averted by the promptness of Mr. Campbell, who drives the motor vehicle which brings the men in from the bush at Butler Bros.’ mill, Ruatapu (says the "Grey River Argus”). It appears that the bush locomotive with logs attached was very late coming from the bush and bad stopped on the line round a bend. When the motor with its human freight rounded the curve and saw the obstacle, prompt action was necessary. Mr. Campbell called to tho men to jump, which they did —the motor crashing into the logs, which smashed through to where tho men had been sitting a few moments previously. Had the men remained, it is almost certain that about six would have been killed.
