RETURNED SOLDIERS

THE ASSOCIATION’S ACTIVITIES. A well attcuiled meeting of the executive of the Wellington Returned Soldiers’ Association was held this week, when, in addition to transacting a large volume of routine business, details were finalised in connection with the annual meeting of the association, whfch will be hold in the club buildings on Tuesday next. July 13. . That there still remains a lot to be done so far as the returned soldier is concerned is shown by a resume of the association’s activities during the past month, when the following cases were dealt with: Interviews on various matters numbered 236; cases for assistance referred to the War Relief Association, 41; pension cases dealt with, 27; returned soldiers placed in permanent and temporary employment, 32; hospital cases visited, 240; and to the Porirua mental institution (where there are 75 soldier patients), two visits were made, and on these occasions every soldier inmate was seen personally by the secretary of the association. Visits to the hospitals and Porirua are carried out regularly, and there is no doubt that in this work a great amount of good is being done, and the association is living up to the highest, ideals so far as the returned soldier is concemcH. The association’s activities this month will cent/e on work under the “Poppy Day” scheme. A large number of men have already been enrolled, and with the funds in hand, as the result of the last Poppy Day appeal, it is expected that every returned soldier seeking employment' will be provided with a job to see him through the winter months.
