MODERN SLEEPER FOR MAIN TRUNK

4 TRIAL TRIP COMMENCED If the experiments carried out by officials of the Railway Department over the week-end bear the anticipated results, a solution will have been found for the three principal problems arising out of the use of sleeping cars between Wellington and Auckland, namely, ventilation, water service, and dttst. The maiden trip of the sleeper de luxe, designed bv the Chief Mcchaniual Engineer (Mr. G. D. Lynde), is now being undertaken between tlie two Main Trunk terminals, and, if all goes well, it is expected that the car will be ready for traffic in the course of a week or so. In reply to a question on Saturday morning, the Prime Minister (Right Hon. J. G. Coates) informed a reporter that arrangements had been completed for the trial trip, and a run to Auckland was commenced over the weekend. The car was tlie one which had been displayed in the Railway Court at the Dunedin Exhibition, and it was the present intention that later on five more sleepers of similar design would be introduced into the service. At the invitation of the Prime Minister the car was examined by Mr. C. R. Bruce, a prominent officer of the Canadian Pacific Railways His observations were couched in the following terms:—“That car is equal to the best I have seen in any part of the world. Nothing can beat if for beauty and comfort. Your Prime Minister told me that several cars of this type are to he put on the lines. Well, he is to be congratulated.”
