PENNY POSTAGE

IMPRACTICABLE IN AUSTRALIA

Melbourne, June 19.

In the House of Representatives, in reply to a question as to whether penny postage could not be inaugurated to coincide with the opening of Canberra (the new Federal capital), the I'ostmasp ter-General, Mr: Gibson, said that it was impracticable to do this. This could be seen when he mentioned that since he came into office new awards had added a million sterling to the Department’s wages bill. He said that if Australia’s telephone charges were the same as those made by private companies in the United States, the revenue of the Department would be £3,000,000 greater than now.—Press Assn.
