UNABLE TO REACH A SETTLEMENT
Australian coastal STRIKE (Rec. March 29, 10.25 p.m.) Sydney, March 29. The coastal steamship owners continued their conference with representatives of the transport group to-day in an endeavour to settle the strike, but after lengthily considering the dispute the owners announced that unless a new body could be formed with leaders different to the present Seamen’s Union they regretted that a settlement could not be reached.—Press Assn
KANNA’S CREW PAID OFF Hobart, March 29. Th crew of the Union' Company’s steamer Kanna, which was declared “black” recently, has been paid off. The withdrawal of the steamer from the Sydney-Hobart trade is having a serious effect on fruitgrowers in the Huon district and the timber industry, as the’Kanna was the only regular collier taking coal to' Hobart. Supplies are tunning low.—Press Assn.
