PAVING WORK
UPLAND ROAD THIS WEEK The most is being made by the paving forces of'the local Highways Board of the present spell of fine weather.’ These days are ideal for paving work, and the gangs are all going at top speed. The deterrent is the fall in temperature consonant with the season, especially where long hauls are necessary, so that in the future the engineers will shape their plans to cover the long hauls in December, January, and February, and shorten them as the autumn advances. The paving of Wakefield Street west to the junction with Victoria Street will probably be completed to-day, and to-morrow may see the first batch of hot-mix conveyed to Kelburn, where Upland Road has been prepared for a permanent surface. On the other side of the harbour the new track has been completed from Ferry Road (Day’s Bay) up to the centre of York Bay, while the base course is down (full width) to a point well round the corner towards Lowry Bay. Given good weather, the curve of that bay should be reached soon after Easter.
The Hutt gang has reached Camp Road at Trentham, and is working steadily on towards Heretaunga.
