On the application of the Commonwealth Steamship Owners’ Association in view of many disputes existing around the coast with the Watersiders’ Federation, a compulsory conference has been ordered by Mr. Justice Powers for Thursday. The -watersiders at present are threatening direct action if _ their demands are not granted. Their demands include increased wages, abolition of afternoon pick-ups, and special overtime allowances. —Press Assn.
COASTAL DISPUTE CONFERENCE CALLED I Sydney, March 27. The Minister of Labour has called a conference of the parties to the coastal shipping dispute for Monday.—Press Assn. NEW UNION REGISTERED Sydney, March 27. It is officially announced that the application by the Sydney branch of the Australian Seamen’s Union for registration as a trades union has been granted. It is generally believed that the objection of the union in seeking registration is to further its fight against the Melbourne branch; also, to assist the Sydney branch to pofnbat activities of a rival organisation which is composed of volunteer seamen in the coastal trade.—Press Assn.
