Air L. J- Berry, secretary of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association, will leave on Wednesday for a five weeks’ trip to Australia. The death "occurred at Milton tecently of Mr. D. K. Kirby, a journalist who was well known in Canterbury and Otago. Air. Kirby joined the reporting staff of “The Press” in 1919, relinquishing his position about four vears ago, in consequence of a breakdown iA health, from which he was unable to recover. Prior to this he was for some time editor of the Temuka Leader,” and later of the “Clutha Leader.’ Mr. Kirby, who was in his 40th year, was predeceased bv his wife some years ago. He leaves a daughter, aged eleven years. The Hon. O. Ha.wken, Minister of Agriculture, left for Christchurch on Saturday night. To-day he will be at Hamner, investigating Forestry matters, and inspecting a recent purchase of 9000 acres for afforestation in the Hurunui district. To-morraw he will open an Agricultural Hall at Rangiora. He will probably return to Wellington on Wednesday morning. The Hon. j. A. Young, Minister of Health, who visited Otaki and Wanganui on Friday, returned to Wellington on Saturday.

Appreciative reference was made at the Nelson Citv Council meeting on Friday night to the late Mr. H. V. Gullv, who for over thirty years acted as town clerk, states our Nelson correspondent. On the mojion of the Mayor (Mr. Lock) the loyal service he had given to the city was placed on record, and sympathy extended to the widow and relations.
