GAS BY THE “THERM”
SYSTEM NOT FAVOURED Regarding the “Gazette” notice this week giving the Government power to compel gas companies to charge by the “therm” instead of by the cubic measurement of gas ' supplied, Sir Harold Beauchamp (chairman of the Wellington Gas Company), when consulted yesterday, stated that the Board of Trade, by legislation, was empowered to inquire into matters concerning the calorific value of gas, etc., and charges for the same. After considerable negotiation between the board and the various gas companies, a satisfactory agreement had been made with regard to the calorific value, etc., of gas supplied. The Board of Trade had power to insist on charging for gas by the “therm” - instead of so much per 1000 cubic. feet, but it was considered unlikely that the power (the therm) system would be adopted. It had already been tried in several countries, and had resulted in endless complications and difficulties between • suppliers of gas and consumers.
