The quarterly meeting of the Foxton Chamber <f Commerce was held .on Thursday Hight, presided over by Mr. John Ross (vice-president). There were also present the Mayor (Mr. M. B. Perreau), and Messrs. J. K. Hornblow, F. Woods, D. R. Barren, R. McMurray, H Osborne, D. Christie, and the secretary (Mr. E. Rimmer). Apologies for absence were received from the president and Mr. G. F. Smith. Correspondence was read and received from the Harbour Board in reply, deputing Messrs. Barber, Chrystall, and McMurray (board members) to confer with the chamber -m matters affecting the shipping of the port. The Postal Department wrote stating that the chamber’s request for installing a stampvending machine had been acceded to and that the machine would be placed in the lobby of the Post Office at an early date. It was resolved to forward a letter of' thanks to the Department. A communication about the Daylight Paving Bill was received from the Sports Protection League, asking the chamber to support the agitation. A general discussion followed, and it was finally decided, with two dissentients, to support the league in its efforts. It was decided to support the Wanganui Chamber in its objection to clearance 'harge of 3d. on postal packages. A lengthy and desultory discussion took place on tile reported statements made by Levin’s representative on the Foxton Harbour Board to the Levin Chamber of Commerce at its last meeting. It was pointed out that many inaccuracies wre e uttered which were prejudicial to the port, and that local members of the Harbour Board should be asked to correct them. The chairman, who has had a lengthy experience in coastal shipping, referred to the difficulties which militated against a sufficient depth of water on the local bar. It was the general opinion of the meeting that if the “cuts” suggested by the Manawatu-Oroua Rivers Board were put in and training walls constructed at the Heads to ( confine the outflow that a natural scouring of the bar would take place with resultant greater depth. The secretary reported that members had been lax in paying their annual subscriptions, and funds were required (o meet current liabilities. A committee was set up to attend to this matter and tc wait on business people and urge them to take an interest in the chamber’s operations for the commercial welfare of the town and district. Rain fell in torrents in the Foxton district on Tuesday night. The downfall was more in the nature of a cloud burst. Minor damage was done in a number of dwellings and business places by the storm water. The rain gauge at the Post Office registered two inches and then overflowed. It is safe to say that the fall registered 2J inches.

Mr. E. Cowley intends to leave on a trip to England on May 22. He will be absent for about four months. Mr. Cowley’s object in making the trip is to visit his mother in Hereford, whom he has not seen since he left England in 1905.

Yesterday afternoon a further match for the Nye Ferns was played on the local gieen. The challenging rink, skipped by Wiustanley, made the pace a cracker from the word “go,” and had scored fifteen points before the holders showed colour. The game can only be described as a debacle, the final scores being 87—10 in favour of the challengers. The fo. lowing are the details:— Holders: Healey, Downes, Woods, Huntley (s.), 10. Challengers: Whibley, Mattai, Roore, Winstanley (s.), 37.

In the third round of the Horowhenua inter-club croquet matches, Foxton met Otaki at Levin on Tuesday and were victorious by 98. points to 85. The following are the scores, Otaki players being mentioned first:—Singles: Mrs. Noble (8) defeated Mrs. Woods (5), 26 —25; Mrs. Evans (9) lost to Mrs. Moore (7), 19—20. Doubles :' Mesdames Smith (11) and Wyatt (11) defeated Mrs. Parkes (7) and Miss Wanklyn (9), 26— 21; Mesdames Oliver (9) and Gillespie (12) lost to Mesdames Owen (6) and Bryant (8J), 14—26. The following are the scores of the thirty-minute tournament of the Foxton ' Croquet Club, played on the green on Wednesday:— Mesdames Owen, Huntley, Barr, Ball, McMurray, and Miss Wanklvn, 2|; Mrs. Moore, 4j. Handicap Singles: Mrs. Moore (sj) defeated Mrs. Ball (5), 26 —18; Mrs. Owen (2J) defeated Mrs. Ball (5), 26—20; Mrs. Woods (3f) defeated Mrs. Parkes (5), 26—12; Mrs. McMurray (2|) defeated Mrs. Barr (5), 26—14.

The Ladies’ Hockey Club opened the season on Wednesday with a practice game on Easton Park.
