McLeod, Minister of Lands, said to-day that he had urged upon his colleagues the necessity of taking in hand more than one area of from 100(1 to 5000 acres of tynical pumice and gum lands for a thorough test, under up-to-date farming conditions, of the economic possibilities of such land, so as to be in a position to confidently invite the taking up of holdings by settlers from other parts of the Dominion or overseas. He was seeking legislative authority to give priority to local applicants and expressed the hope that private owners of large areas of this class of land in the north would endeavour to develop them profitably.
