The death is reported from Masterton of Mr. Janies Miller, of Renall Street, a pioneer settler who was closely associated with the welfare and advancement of the district. Mr._ Miller was born in Wellington in 1815 ; He took an active part in local politics, notably in connection with the laueru Road Board and the Masterton County Council. During the troublous times with the Maoris' he was an officer in the Mounted Defence Force stationed at Marton. He went to the Wairarapa in the earlv days of its settlement, and took up 'land' in the Upper Taueru district 55 vears ago, in conjunction with his two'elder brothers, Robert and William, who predeceased him some years since. He retired twenty years ago to Mastertoil. The deceased leaves a widow, three sons (Messrs. F. J. Miller, Mastcrton, and H. A. Miller, Waikato, and Rev. R. Miller, of Te Kuiti), and three daughters (Miss Isa Miller, Masterton; Mrs. C. V. Smith, Waverley, cud Mrs. J. W. Falloon, of Bideford). Another daughter (Mrs J. A. Renall) died a few years ago. He had also two sisters, Mrs. Oliver, Napier, aged 90, and Mrs. Allan Cameron, Seatoun, aged 86.
