THE RACING WORLD

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “The Watcher.”) The Taranaki, Poverty Bay, and Dunedin meetings will be concluded today, and the Rotorua meeting will commence, concluding on Monday. It used to be said that Gloaming was responsible for small fields in weight-for-age races, and certain clubs have during the past season or two cut some weight-for-age events out of their programmes. It is interesting to ' note that Gloaming’s retirement has not improved the size of fields to any great extent. The Taranaki Stakes to-day will see a small field go to the post, and the latest from Wanganui is- a report that the field for the Jackson Stakes next week may be reduced to four. These races nevertheless will attract a lot of interest, and be worth seeing, as‘the best class of horse is always engaged, but it is fairly evident that the presence of a champion is not the sole cause for the poor support accorded this class of event by owners. There is little doubt that from the point of view of clubs, owners, and horses finance is the deciding factor.

Prior to leaving Wanganui for New Plymouth, Motley was responsible for a smart gallop over five furlongs on a dead track, the time being lmin. 3 2-ssec. Motley will be making an attempt to win the Taranaki Stakes for the second successive year to-day, but she will meet with strenuous opposition.

In carrying a shot vest when he rode Oration in the Juvenile • Handicap at New Plymouth on Saturday, J. Barry directly contravened Part XXIII, Rule 3, of thdpßules of Racing, which states: "No jockey shall carry any dead weight about his body during a race.” 'I his was the new rule introduced at the last sittings of the conference delegates, and however impractical it mav be regarded by jockeys and trainers it is a rule, and as such must be respected and obeyed. The objection raised regarding the payment of the stakes raises an interesting question. Part XXXII, Rule 1, subclause (L) renders a horse and his jockey liable to disqualification for corrupt practice if he "knowingly or wilfully ride in any race unless qualified under these rules to do so.” A jockey with a shot vest is not qualified under the rules, that is quite clear, and the specified punishment is disqualification, not a fine. The rule which gives stewards power to fine specially mentions that punishment by stewards is subject to the specific penalties provided by the rules in the case of certain specific offences, and this is one of them. The Taranaki stewards, in fining Barry £2O, no doubt acted under the n;le which reads: "In the case of a breach of these rules.in respect of which breach no penalty is specified, the stewards mav inflict a fine not exceeding 20 sovs . . but the rule with regard to corrupt practices quoted above would certainlv appear to be the correct rule to apply to the case. Paper Boy is well treated ill the two-vear-old handicap at Dunedin to-day, being dropped 101 b. from the weight he carried in the Champagne Stakes, in which he finished up with Pink icrrace, who has only 21b. less. The scale of weights in the two principal handicaps, at Dunedin to-day is higher than on the first day. Arpent s 7.13 brings him up to a weight which will no doubt induce his connections to engage M. McCarten, as they did successfully at Trentham last month, and he may run we 11... The unpenalised Oration may lead, the favourites a merry dance in the Taranaki Stakes to-day,' and repeat his performance as a two-year-old in the Avondale All-aged Stakes. He is brilliant enough to do it.

The top weights in the Hurdles at New Plymouth to-day should not experience much difficulty in holding their own again, and the extra distance will be in favour of Bustler and Santiago.

Bonona was unlucky' at Hawera and mav run well to-day ait New Plymouth in the race at set weights, 8.7.

Pouma may’ again run well in_ the Stewards’ Handicap. She is in a slightly'Weaker field at a handy weight, with the good ones carrying more than on the first day.

There is a large field in the Mokau Handicap. Glengariff on his recent form should be prominent. Lucernal may be the best of the light weights. It would not be surprising to find old Surveyor showing up again in his mile and a quarter engagement at New Plymouth to-day. His 9.0 will not trouble him, and his form at Hawera tvas good enough for those near him in the handicap. Imperial Spark appears to be racing into something like Lis best form.

Horoinea (was (taken to New Plymouth, but was not started the first day. She has been given an opportunity to distinguish herself in the Omata Handicap to-day, and she should run prominently. Royal Borm claims a double engagement at New Plymouth to-day, and so does Toapaiti in the same events. They are both improving gallopers.

The Riccarton trainer T. H. Gillett appears to have a very strong hand in the Hazlett Memorial Plate with Count Cavour and Glentruin representing his stable out of the four runners.

Tarleton appears to/have run a bad race in the Dunedin Cup, but the soft ground may not have been to his liking, and he may show up to-day. The scale of weights is about 101 b. higher than in the Cup, and with Ravenna he appears to have come off best in the weights on a comparison with those who tan the first day. Gala Dav has been galloping well, and should command good .support in the Rotorua Cup. His recent form suggests that he will take a prominent part in the race. L. Manson will be his pilot.

Riding engagements announced for the Rotorua meeting are as follow:-— L. Manson. Gala Day, Green Bonnet and Rarakau R. Orange, Hangawera; .A. Driscoll, Native Girl; and W. H. Jones, Mosaic. Charlady, Nancy Lee, Dave, Merry Ann, and Glen Abbey. Danae is on the improve, as she demonstrated bv running third in a hack event- at Trentham last month, Provided that she repeats her latest form, she should race prominently among the class she is likelv to meet at Rotorua.

Money Order will probably be sent to Svdncv at the back end of the season, and given a chance to distinguish himself in sprint races.

The fortnight’s suspension imposed upon R. E. Thompson by the Takapuna Jockev Club expired yesterday, and Thompson expects to be riding at the Rotor 1 .- meeting. One of his mounts will ‘be Irish Jig. A dav or two prior to the recent Takapuna meeting Mr. J. Gleeson received the following letter from a Maori, and for native ingenuity and shrewdness it is hard to beat. The letter read :— Mr. Gleeson, Dear Sir, Tena koc.— Mv uncle informed me that you have a likelv winner for the forthcoming Takapttna meeting.

As I am unable to attend the Takapuna meeting as I have to go to Te Kuiti without fail on the same race date. However I am enclosing five pounds to invest on the first winner and—all np—on the second investment.

I forgot to mention that half of the enclosed is mv uncle’s investment. I am onlv forward on the strength of mv knowledge that you have a good judgment on picking good winners. I trust that I am not putting you into a lot of trouble. However, pick up a winnci, and every kia ora. . E. Kcesing has been engaged to ride Brushwood Bov, Tactician and Joy Ride at Rotorua. Glentruin is reported from the \v mgatui tracks to be in good shape for her encratrement in the Hazlett Memorial Stakes, to be run to-day.
