STOWAWAY IN TROUBLE
Pleading guilty in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr, E. Page. S.M., to a charge of having secreted himself on board the s.s. Moeraki from Melbourne without having first paid his passage money, John Dwyer (aged 26). a native of Ireland, was convicted and ordered to pay the sum of £7 155., the amount of his fare.
A recommendation in the report of tho Observatory Connnittco at last night’s meeting of the city council that Jill) be granted for painting the telescope at the observatory called forth a protset from Councillor R. A. IVright. "The Government,” ho said, "is getting the full benefit of the telescope which cost this city £lOOO. They are doing nothing in the way of contributing to its cost. It is about time they came io light and paid something.” Councillor Meadowcroft: intimated that that aspect of the question would bo considered by the committee, and a report made to the council next meeting.
