BIG FISH IN BAY OF ISLANDS By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, February 11. Recent catclics near Russell include the following:—Mr. Zane Grey, swordfish, ‘2301b.; Captain Alitchell, swordfish, 2991 b.; Mr. W. Lambc (Sydney), swordfish, 2101 b.; Mrs. Sparrow (England), swordfish, 2701 b.; Air. G. A. Buddle (Auckland), mako .-.hark, 2471 b. When asked what he thought of the fishing in the Bay of Islands, Air. Greysaid : “You have here a wonderful fishing ground, and I hope to catch a fish weighing anything up to 10001 b.” Captain Mitchell and Air. Grey fish only with a single hook. All the other anglers use a treble hook, r.nd they have such strong gear that they can bring a swordfish alongside the launch in a few minutes

Among fishing visitors at Russell are Colonel and Airs. Dunville and Alajor Corbett, of Ireland; Colonel and Airs. Sparrow, of Essex, England; Air. T. R. Hubback, Malay States.' Air. R. Kellum, a wealthy American, who is visiting New Zealand in the private yacht Kaimiloa, will arrive at Russell <_n February 18, for ten days’ fishing. He has three swordfishing launches of his own, and has chartered another cue at Russell. Fiftv-eiglit big game fish have already been taken bv anglers at the Bay of Islands this season. At the corresponding date last year only seven fish had been caught, showing either that the season has opened earlier or that there Tire more fish on the grounds. Probably both factors arc operating, with the addition that there are more rods engaged ; n quest of big fish. Air. Alma Baker yesterday hooked another broadbill. Tic played it for 15 minutes, but lost it.
