BOWLS

DOMINION TOURNEY

SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP DECIDED Dunedin, January 21. The New Zealand Bowling Association’s annual tournament is well on towards completion. The singles comptition has been finished, and there are only three lots of players left in the rinks championship. The pairs championship is not so well advanced. All the green winners in the pairs comptition have been found, and quite a number of post-section games have been decided. Two games have yet' to be played to reach the semi-final stage. If the fine weather continues the rinks comptition will be completed to-day. As there are only two games at the most to be played now, the pairs comptition will reach finality to-day in the ordinary course of events. In the final of the singles championship Tretheway was too good for Foster for the greater part of the game, and 18 heads had been played before the latter got a lead of one. In the concluding stages the scores were very close. The scores were 16 all, with two heads to go. In the final head Foster’s first was a trifle short and narrow. Tretheway’s first was a better one, but Foster s second was a beauty, finishing up just behind kitty. Tretheway, who was a little narrow with his second, drove with his third and fourth, but just missed, leaving Foster the winner by 18 points to 16, and the champion singles bowler of New Zealand. Foster thus went through twelve rounds without losing a game. . . - , In the winning margins in the fourth round of the post-section play in the rinks, Harraway (Dunedin) was much too strong for Malcolm (Balmacewen). The final scores were Harraway 34-11. Grav (Kelburn) and Thomson were always together until the fourteenth , head, after which Thomson had much the better of it, winning 25-15. Stewart (Dunedin), eliminated Gibson Uaieri) bv 23-12; Hutchison (Dunedin) had an easy win over Wright (St. Helier’s). /., . . ~ The winning margins in the httn round of the rinks were again wide, with the exception of the game between, Gray and Stewart. Thomson and Casey, the only two-lifers left, met, and Thomson was victorious by 11 points, thus notching his thirteenth consecutive win in the tournament. Harraway inflicted a crushing defeat on Hutchinson, and Gray eliminated Stewart after a good game, in which Gray always held the upper hand. In the sixth round Casey was eliminated by Gray, and Thomson went under to Harraway, who scored consistently throughout to win by 21 points to 13. . - , *. * -There are only three survivors left in the rinks—Harraway, Gray, and Thomson, all with one life. ' Following a protest the twenty-first head in the championship pairs was replaved, and the result was a win for Matai, who captured the premier hon- . ours in their section. ‘ Magnificent bowling was witnessed in the first round of the post-section play, "when Pilkington met Benefield. It was anyone’s game until the finish. Pilkington finished four up. Pastier (St. Clair.) had an easy win over W. B. Allan (Taicri). Pilkington and Pastier had a great go in the second round of the postsection play, the final result bring a win for the former.
