ANNIVERSARY DAY
WELLINGTON’S EIGHTYSIXTH BIRTHDAY HOW THE DAY WILL BE SPENT Wellington will celebrate, its 86th birthday to-day, and a general holiday will be observed in honour of the event. The public will have a wide range of attractions to select from, and if the present spell of beautiful summer weather holds the day .should prove memorable.
For those who favour the sport of kings, there will be the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting at Trentham and the Foxton meeting. Many will take the opportunity of visiting the Sounds afforded by the Union Steam Ship Company’s excursion to Picton. The Waliine will leave Wellington at 8 a.m., and five hours will be spent at Picton, Wellington being rebelled again at 5.15 p.m. Followers of tennis will have, plenty to interest them in the new courts at Miramar, where the Wellington provincial championship tournament will be in full swing. The New Zealand croquet tournament will be continued at Kelburn and Karori, and cricket matches will be m progress at Kelburn Park and the Basin., Reserve. The Wellington regatta should supply good entertinment at the Boat Harbour, and motor cyclists should enjoy themselves at the Manatvatu Motor Racing Club’s carnival at Ashhurst. There will be sports at Porirua and the carnival at Worser Bay. The dav will be fittingly rounded off with evening performances, of which there will be an attractive range. The J. C. Williamson Company will continue the performance ot the merry comedy, "Leave it to Jane,” at the Grand Opera House. Bright programmes will be submitted by Wirths’ Circus, and at His Majesty’s Theatre, and all the picture palaces advertise attractive bills. . As is fitting on Wellington’s 86th birthday, the Early Settlers’ Association will hold a reunion in their hall in Abel Smith Street. The old identities will foregather at 2.30, and chat over the davs when Wellington was young. A birthday cake will figure prominently in .the afterfioon proceedings, and this will be cut by the oldest lady settler present. The 7.30 session will be devoted to dancing, music, and cards. The Eastbourne ferry management advertise a special holiday timetable, and, as usual, thousands of people will cross the harbour to spend the day in the cool shade of the native bush at Rona Bay, Day’s Bay, and Muritai. Tennis courts are available at Day’s Bay and Rona Bay, to. say nothing of the attractions of bathing.
