POST-SECTION PLAY

The Dominion bowling tournament was advanced a stage further to-day. As far as the weather was concerned tho day was one of the best experienced since the tournament was commenced. The gieens were very keen and some splendid games witnessed by the numerous spectators. 'Die day was devoted to the rinks and pairs championships. In the rinks competition three rounds of post-section play were decided. There were 17 rinks left at the close of the section play, but after to-day’s games the number was reduced to nine. The post-sod ion play is decided on the twolife system, and at present there are three rinks—Casey (Carlton), Thomson (Invercargill), and Gray (Kelburn)—with two lives, and six—Stewart (Dunedin), Hutchison (Dunedin), Wright (St. Heliors), Gibson (Tnieri), Malcolm (lialmacewen), and Harraway (Dunedin)— with one life.

Pilkington, whose rink won the championship last year, went out in the third round of post-section play. In the first round of the post-section play in the rinks, ITarraway (Dunedin) started off with a single against Gray (Kelburn), but tho latter retaliated with a pair of twn’s. A two to Hnrraway was followed by n single to Gray, llarraway got a single on each of the next three heads, and with eight heads plaved was leading by six points to five. The next two heads yielded scores to Gray, who put on a two and a five, thus leading by 12 points to six with ten heads decided. Harraway scored three singles and a two on the next four heads. With 14 ends decided, Gray was leading by 12 points to 11. The time limit expired at the eighteenth head, and Gray secured a win by 16 points to 13. Pilkington (Hamilton) opened with a single against Anderson (Roslyn), but the latter got two on the second head. Pilkington then put on four and two singles, and after the local rink had scored another single, Pilkington secured four, and was leading by 11 points to three at the end of seven heads. In the next three ends Anderson scored four to Pilkington’s one, but the Hamilton players thnii added four and a three to their aggregate, making them U points up with 12 heads played. In the next eight heads Anderson did most of the scoring, but he could not catch liis opixment, who won by 22 points to 13 on the twentieth head. Wright (St. Heliers) opened very well against McCurdy (St. Kilda), scoring 1 1. 2 6. 3. on the first five heads. With sixteen heads played Wright was well in front, having notched 19 irnints to McCurdy's 9. McCurdy now camo to light, and scored four singles and a five on the next five heads, making his score 18—19. leaving Wright victor by 1 point. Casey (Carlion) was leading Malcolm (Balniacewcn) by 9 points to 3 after seven heads. Malcolm improved his score on the next head by notching three to which Casey replied with a brace. Another two io Malcolm and then Casey piled on 1,3, 3. 2, to make his score 20—18 after 11 ends. After another two heads the score was, Casey 23—12. Malcolm now camo to light with 2.3, 2. .1 on the next four heads, leaving him only one point in arrears. Casey scored on the last, head and won 24 22. Some remarkable scoring was seen m the second round. Big loads were established by five rinks. Tn the first seven heads ITarraway ran away from Anderson from tho start of their game and was leading by 17 points ’o.nil when seven heads had been played. Die former got four on tho third head and 6 on the sixth. Anderson scored on five heads out of (lie next seven, but after 14 ends he was still 9 down, the aggregates being 19-10 in favour of Harrawav. A 5, a 3, and a single to Hanawav put the issue beyond reasonable doubt, and tho Dunedin rink finished up well ahead, the final scores being 28—18 in their favour. A 5 and a 3 to Casey'in the first two ends and a 5 on the fourth put him in a strong position against Benefield, who had scored only 1 up till that stage. With seven heads played, Casey' led by 17 points to 2, and in the next seven heads the relative positions were practically unchanged, the Carlton rink being un by 21 points to 7. Casey was never troubled, and ran out an easy winner by 27 points to 19. ~ „ , , Thomson scored 4 in the first two heads against Pilkington, but the latter put on 3 in the next two. With seven heads played, Thomson led by 7 points to 4, but a 4 and 2 in the next two ends put Pilkington in the lead by 10 points to 7. On the next six heads Thomson did all the scoring, and when 15 ends had been decided he was leading by 17 points to 10. In the last few heads Pilkington reduced the gap. but Thomson maintained the lead, and won by 21 points to 17. . . r, Wright opened well against Gray, leadin" 6-0 after four heads, and 9—l after seven. Gray then scored 4,3, 2,3, on .the next four heads to go into the lead 13-9. Wright notched 1 and 2 on the next two, but Graythen took command, and won, 24—14. In the third round there were some very keen contests, in which the issue was in doubt right up till tlm finish. One of the best fights was that between Stewart and Thomson. The former opened with two singles, but Thomson scored on tho next three heads on which he scored 4. Stewart got to 7 m the next two heads, but Thomson equalised scores on the ninth head, the figures being 7 all. Thomson ran into a lead of 7 points in the next three heads, on which he got two 3 s . an< J a single. A 4 and a 3to Stewart on the next two heads made the scores H all. with 14 heads played. Thomson got three 2’s and a single in the next four ends, whereas Stewart failed to score, and the game ended on the twentieth head, when Thomson was leading bv 24 to 16. , Harraway and Bremner, both onelifers, met and Harraway proved victorious, thus eliminating Bremner. Harrawav always had the game in hand, leading 12—i after six heads, 19—5 alter 14, and eventually won by 23 points tO In 4 the tie between Hutchison and Casey, the latter was always in charge, and won well by 24 to 18. Wright’s St. Heliers rink, and Pilknmton’s Hamilton ring provided an exciting finish, tho rinks Doing on the last head and necessitating the playing of an extra head. Pilkington had piled un a good load before Wright scored. The score was 14—0 after five ends. Aitor 11 heads.
