CANADIAN POLITICS

WANT-OF-CONFIDENCE

MOTION

BROUGHT DOWN BY THE CONSERVATIVES

Ottawa, January 18. The Conservatives on Monday brought down their expected amendment to the Speech from the Throne in the House of Commons. The Conservative leader, Mr. Meighen, in closing his speech in reference to the Australian treaty declared that in addition to the Australian competition the Canadian farmer was being asked to pay, so that paper manufacturers could enjoy an advantage in the Australian market. The amendment regretted that the Speech from the Throne gave no indication of a policy designed to enlarge the volume of employment in Canada—“particularly to give to producers of farm products, coal, and primary products the advantage they are, tinder present world conditions, entitled to enjoy in the market of the world.”—Aus.-N.Z. AUSTRALIAN TREATY CRITICISED

EFFECT ON FRUIT INDUSTRY. (Rec. January 20, 10.20 p.m.) Vancouver, January 19.

Criticism of the Australian Trade treaty, inso far as it affects the fruit industry of Canada, was featured in the presidential address by Mr. Lionel Ward, at the annual meeting of the British Columbia Fruit-growers’ Association at Vernon, British Columbia, on Tuesday. Mr. Ward warned his hearers: “The treaty is one which will have very serious effects on the fruit and vegetable industry of the province, as already quotations have been received for apricot pulp at a lower delivered price than growers were receiving in tlie past for fresh fruit. The same condition is likely to arise with berry pulp and canned tomatoes.”—Reuter.
