CRICKET

CAPTAIN OF ENGLAND

SUITABILITY DISCUSSED OF CARR And fender

London, January 18.

The Australian Press Association un'derstands that the general assumption in English cricketing circles is that A. W. Carr as captain of England is not favoured in the highest quarters, where the chances of P. G. H. Fender are preferred. This is the more inte resting becaus© it is believed that Fender so far has not been persona grata with the selectors. There is a widespread impression that the reason the Marylebone Club has not so far invited him to captain England is the recollection of his newspaper cables from Australia, which it is thought .might make his captaincy unpopular in Australia. As a fact, recent cables from Australia have shown that instructed opinion in Australia considers Fender should captain the side. Fender has captained Surrey with great skill and generalship. G. A. Faulkner, the South African, regards him as the best tactician in England. Moreover, Fender is an excellent change bowler; indeed, Bardsley described him as the best change in England. Finally, he is a daring captain and takes risks, whereas Carr is orthodox and would captain the side on ordinary lines.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. /
