SPIRIT OF ROTARY
PALMERSTON CLUB’S VIEWS. The first Rotarv luncheon of the year was held by the Palmerston North Club yesterday, when tho opportunity was taken by a number of Rotarians to express their views on the true function of their organisation. The luncheon was of an informal nature, and Rotarian H. L. Young presided over a fair attendance of members. ' The value of service in tho community was stressed bv a number of speakers, and Rotarian M. Cohen offered the opinion that Rotary was not a charitable institution, but more of a service. Tho greatest good, he said, would he found in tho use and weight of individual effort to encompass tho desires of tho organisation to help the community. Rotary brought a splendid spirit of goodfellowship in citizenship, which proved so valuable to-day. t Rotarian Bell suggested that perhaps too much attention was paid to outride' organisations. Rotarian Salmon held that there was - something to be said in favour of the v previous speaker's remarks, and though t that outside activities should ho limited. Tho main object of Rotary was to;educate its own members info good living and community spirit. Individually, Rotarians should he members of tho various bodies organised for tho progress of the town. Tho first object of Rotary was to introduce member to member, to lot them know that there was something good-and many unsuspected fine q On behalf of the directors the chairman expressed his appreciation of the thanks and kindly criticism come forth during the Rothcrim.. Them had horn no jarring note, and it™ very gratifying to know that cveryhod was satisfied. No now movement would ho undertaken until their obligations m regard to present ones had been fulfilled. The spirit of Rotary in North was greater to-day tlmn it wa ; twelve months ngo, and lie tolt justiM ■ in that the Present vear Uoidd see great improvements in the local or gnnisation.
