THE HOLIDAY IN PALMERSTON

FINE WEATHER AND RECORD CROWDS

Palmerston North, December 28. The past few days have seen record crowds in Palmetston North, and today there appears to be no slackening oil in the number passing through the town. The railway station continues to be the scene of unusual activity and one day alone saw over 10,000 passengers pass through the station. Needless to say this entails a great deal o'f extra work on the part of the officials, but the arrangements have been carried out most satisfactorily. The crowded state of many of the express trains has caused many amusiu» sights at the Palmerston North station, and considerable amusement was caused by two young men who had armed themselves with empty petrol tins which were to act as seats on an express where even standing room was at a premium. Although a record crowd again took advantage of the fine weather to visit (he Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting at Awapuni, while others journeyed to Foxton, there has been a considerable number of people in town to-day and the majority of the shops which were open teported satisfactory business, the bigger percentage of which was done by visitors from the country. With the advent of perfect weather the holidays were taken full advantage of by motorists from all parts o)f the island. There has been, however, a remarkable absence of serious accidents in the district, while the traffic• arrangements in the citv itself no doubt obviated many possible mishaps.
