In perfect, weather, on a fast wicket, ami before a moderate attendance, South Australia met New Zealand yesterday. Tlie. local men won (he toss and batted. Hope and Cunningham, the opening bowlers, caused early disaster, three, wickets falling for eight runs. Kyniill and A. Richardson stopped the rot, scoring freely off both bowlers, 50 coming up in thirty-eight minutes. Ryinill was brilliant atid reached 50 in fortynine minutes. The partnership realis'-d 8! in the same time. Arthur Richardson was quiet before lunch, but brightened up afterwards and had added 20 when Hope bowled him. He was in for an hour and 40 minutes for his 77. Ho hit seven 4’s and batted bi;ightly. The board then showed five wickets down for 162.

The local position was insecure. Murray was not confident. McKay and Alexander (University youths) then became associated. Both were confident. PRESS v. HUTT COLTS The Hutt colts, coached by L. T. Cobcroft, proved too strong for tlie Press team in a match on the Hutt Recreation Ground on Boxing Day. The Dress could only total 100 in their first innings, Mummery (44), Watson (7 not out), and Ryan (13) being the only batsmen to get runs against the bowling of Cobcroft (five for 39) and Neazor (four for 28). Tho colts replied with 158, Lockett (25), Neazor (20), Murphy (18), Boss (17), Wall (13), Matthews (12), and Gwilliam (11) all showing the effect of_ sound coaching. Miller (live for 56), Hendry (three for 32), Jeffs (two for 22), and Watson (one for 12) took the wickets for the Press, who again found Cobcroft’s slows too much for them in the second innings. Keeping them up well, and turning them from both sides, uobcroft secured the excellent bowling figures of seven for 31, thus giving him the rich harvest of twelve wickets for 70 runs in the match. Howat (22) slid Matson (12) were the top-scorers in this innings. Lockett -'one for 14), Neazor (one for 17). and Wall (two for 5) also biwled well. Hutt Jut off the 20 runs required to win for the loss of one wicket, and thug won the match by nine v ickets. The Hutt Club treated tlieii visitors most hospitably, entertaining them at luncheon. A committee consisting of Mesdames W. E. Elsom, W. A. AldersIcy R. T. Aldcrsley, L. T. Cobcroft, R. D ’Roberts, and Miss Matthews, provided afternoon tea. Tho Press team so enjoved tho outing on tho picturesque Hutt ground that they have arranged to play a return match on New Years Day on the same giotind.

TOWN v. COUNTRY TO-DAY

KEEN CONTEST EXPECTED.

The annual trial of strength between Town and Country, which will commence at the Basin Reserve to-day, promises to furnish a keen contest. The Countrj' players assembled in Wellington on Saturday. Of the team originallv selected, Kingston (laianaki) and' O’Connell (Hawke’s Bay) aro unable to play. Ritchie has been chosen to take Kingston’s place behind the wickets, but some doubt is expressed as to the ability to get into touch with Ritchie, who is on a farm somewhere in Hawke’s Bay. R. P. I'° uddn nui) was chosen as twelfth man, but it is not known whether he will be down for the match. Beale, tho Auckland enthusiast, has done more to encourage young players than any man in the Dominion. A favourite recreation of his is to take teams of Auckland colts on tour in order that they may get experience in good company. Many years ago he took a team round the North Island, which included C. C. Dacre. Mr. Beale has organised another tour this season, and his team of colts will play a match against a Wellington colts’ team at Kelbnrn Park on January 5 and 6.
