BOXING DAY

VARIETY A PLEASANT FEATURE

PLEASURE RESORTS FULLY AVAILED OF

For variety ou Boxing Day, the Welliugtoniaii and visitors to the capital had a big programme to choose from, and this was responsible for a more even distribution of. the traffic and less of the rush to particular localities as has often been evidenced on Boxing Dav in the past. There was a pretty genera! exodus in tlic direction of Palmerston North, where the nearest race meeting to Wellington was held, and although the general trend of the railway traffic for the previous few days had been towards the South, somewhere in the vicinity of 500 or GOO fancied the races, and the early train from Thorndon carried a full complement. Paekakariki, Plimmerton, Titabi Bay, Otaki and most of the pleasant seaside spots adjacent to the city were gcnerallv well patronised for the day, although the returns will no doubt show a slight decrease on the short distances on account of the local counter attractions. About 800 people travelled between Lambton and Upper Hutt on Saturday, and approximately 200 went through to the Wairarapa. Those who were prepared to put up with the. high wind that robbed an otherwise beautiful day of some of its pleasantness, made in the direction of the beach galas at T’etone and at Lyall Bay, and both buses and trains were fairly heavily patronised. Although there were no conspicuously great numbers qt Lyall Bay in the forenoon, the trams and buses had all they could do to keep up with tlic traffic which accelerated in the afternoon and maintained until early evening. Tlic Caledonian sports, at tlic Basin Reserve, offered a pleasant opportunity for lovers of athletics to enjoy their sport from the commodious new grandstand. The insistent call of the sea found the (errv boats taxed to the limit, and the run’ to Picton on the new Tamaliine was made by large numbers, a noticeable feature being the motor-cars on board, which meant that holidaymakers were going to taste the joys of making their leisurely way down the coast, in many cases to Christchurch and some to the West Coast. The popular run to Dav’s Bav enticed fair numbers, who were privileged to hear, eti route, the Ponsonby Boys’ Band. The bus service was also well patronised by those content to skirt the harbour and enjoy the fine parorama effect obtainable when nearing I.owrv Bay.

The excellent amusement circuit in the capital was fully availed of on Boxing night, and iti many cases picnickers still attired in flannels threw convention to tlic winds and "made the day of it” by attending the pictures.
