THE RACING CARNIVAL

RAPINE WINS AUCKLAND CUP

LYSANDER’S FOAL STAKES

MR G, F. MOORE’S DOUBLE WIN IN RAILWAY

MANAWATU CUP GOES TO CLARINDA Boxing 'day is one of the busiest and most important days of the racing season, and on Saturday the holiday racing carnival was launched throughout the country under conditions making for pleasant enjoyment and interesting racing. The event of chief importance was the 'Auckland Cup, which was won by Mr. A. B. Williams’s Rapine, from the southerner Count Cavour, with Te Monanui and The Banker in the minor positions. A sensational defeat was recorded in the Great Northern Foal Stakes when Commendation ran unplaced, the race being won by Mr. G. M. Currie’s colt Lysander (Absurd—Pennon) from Royal Tea and Joy King. The favourite was left at the post. A remarkable feat was performed in the Railway Handicap by Mr. G. F. Moore’s horses Reremoana'and Lady Cavendish. They were drawn in separate divisions, and both were successful, a happening that will probaly remain unequalled in a race of this standard. Locally chief interest was taken in the opening day of the Manawatu meeting. Clarinda won the Cup from Enthusiasm and Ngata and Grand Knight won the sprint from Shirley and Peneus. At Taranaki Income won the principal race, and at Dunedin Listening Post was successful. Substantial increases in totalisator turnovers were features of the main meetings.

MANAWATU MEETING : CLARINDA WINS THE CUP SPRINT TO GRAND KNIGHT (By “The Watcher.”) A' tiemendous crowd assembled at Awapnni on Saturday for the opening day of the Manawatu summer meetingin fact it is doubtful if the gatekeepers . ever handled such a crowd, even in the hectic days of the post-war period. A prolonged and irritating traffic jamb occurred on the road leading into'the ‘ course. So heavy was the motor traffic. Unfortunately it is the only approach to the course, and as the traffic was inadequately • controlled the road was blocked for over a mile with cars two, three, four, and even five deep. It was a sight which even the oldest patron of the Manawatu meetings could not recall having seen before. Hundreds of the motor-borne passengers got out and walked to the course -sooner than stand the delay, and the special trains from north and south brought packed loads to the course. The special from Wellington was crowded before it reached Johnsonville, where four more carriages were requisitioned, but a large number of people made the journey standing for lack of seating accommodation. The course was crowded in all parts, and even the spacious grounds, which are a feature at Awapuni, were taxed to their utmost. The holiday spirit was abroad, and the .huge crowd obtained a full day’s enjovment and excitement from the excellent racing provided. The racing, indeed, was excellent, particularly the big event of the day, the Manawatu Cup, and Awapuni has seldom, if ever, enjoyed such popularity or seen such a successful day’s racing as was held there on Saturday. Arrangements were admirable in every respect, bar the traffic control, which was improved and better organised for the return journey. The course and its appointments were a picture, reflecting great credit on the caretaker and those responsible. The chief event of the meeting, the Manawatu Cup, was won by Mr. R. A. McKenzie’s mare Clarinda from Mr. T. A. Duncan’s mare Enthusiasm, with Mr. J. Bull’s gelding Ngata in third place, the finish being close and exciting. This is Clarinda’s most important victory to date, and makes amends for some unlucky races earlier in her career. By Kilbroney from Black Ada, she is a half-sister to Clandhu, with whom Mr. McKenzie won the same race last year, both being bred by their owner. She was turned out in perfect condition by her trainer (T. Lloyd), and being owned by a popular steward of the club her victory was received with marked signs of approval from the crowd. Both winner and runner-up were ridden by Riccarton boys, Cutts Brothers’ apprentice H. Burns being on Clarinda and D. Cotton on Enthusiasm.

The Fitzherbert Handicap was won in brilliant style by the English horse Grand Knight. Grand Knight, who is by the Derby winner Grand Parade from Jennesse, was bred by Lord Glanelly. He was recognised as a very fast horse on the English Turf, but doubts were cast upon his courage. He was secured by Mr. Eric Riddiford in England last year along with other purchases, and he was raced soon after his arrival. He showed a great deal of pace, but lacked finishing power, which lent colour to the English estimate of his courage, and Mr. Riddiford did not hold a very high opinion of him. He could at one stage have been secured cheaply, and eventually he was leased to Mr. Vivian Riddiford early this

season. Time and acclimatisation have worked wonders in Grand Knight, who is -now a great proposition as a racehorse with potentialities as a sire. Great credit is due to S. Reid for the manner in which he has trained this horse, and it is also due tn him that he is now racing in his patron’s colours; for,, be it said, that Mr. Riddiford until just recently shared his brother’s opinion of the horse, and was guided by Reid’s opinion when the lease was secured Trcntham and Woodville stables shared the racing honours, each winning three races, two going to S. Reid's stable. B. H. Morris had a successful day, riding three winners. . The large attendance resulted in spirited wagering on every race. Some well-backed horses won, but actual first favourites had a very lean day. Neverrheless the totalisator staff were working at full pressure all day, and had the satisfaction at the end of the afternoon of handling over £9OOO on the last race, for a day’s total of £57,79a, as compared with £50,353 for the first day lasj yca&.

TOKOMARU HURDLES. Santiago was favourite for the hurdle tacc. with Highway and Many Colours nearly as well laucied, and this trio carried the bulk of the money. It fairly indicated the result, except that the.v finished in inverse order, and when it came to the real business of the race they were the only runners in the contest. The honours of the race were with the top-weight. He gave Many Colours 121 b. and ran him. very close, after being out making the pace practically throughout. Many Colours is an improving hurdler, but may now find his weight troublesome. Santiago did not have too good a run in the final stages of the race, being disappointed in an opening. He looked at the last hurdle as if he might win, but his

finish was not very generous. The Emperor and Te Maire ran fair races. Sit Fanciful jumped well, but was always well back. Admiral Codrington was up 'near the front for a mile and a quarter, when he retired. MAIDEN PLATE. The form of Joy Bird was sufficient to make her the public choice in the Maiden Race, but there was confident money for Bank Draft, while Anklet was also well supported. These three filled the places. Joy Bird had every chance, but was decisively beaten by Bank Draft, who was well handled by his rider. Anklet, who ran second, was travelling well at the finish. Both Bank Draft and Anklet should be heard of again very soon. The remainder of the field was outclassed, but for ndnor company Panart, Wanderlust, and Tannadice should be remembered. The Waikato representative Paddon, half-brother to White Comet, was quietly fancied, but he got little opportunity to show anything, as he was slow to get away. Kyla showed earlv ■ speed, but did not see it out. If she would run on she would win races. TARARUA WELTER.

Novar was a hot favourite for the Hack Welter Handicap, carrying over £lOOO more than the second choice Mangatoetoe. Kilorum and Polar and Kilburn were also backed. The surprise of the day was in store, coming from the little fancied Opa, who scored a brilliant win. He was one of the last to leave the straight, was still well back with half a mile to go, received a check on the turn, and then swooped down on the leaders to take the lead before reaching the distance. He is an elder half-brother to First Acre. His form at Feilding was good enough to say he had an excellent chance, and his poor support was surprising. Since Feilding he has been trained by H. Connop, and has improved wonderfully. Novar ran a good race, being prominent throughout and finishing fifth. Newbury King

and Kilburn put in good runs over the concluding stages, and their turn should soon come, particularly for the latter. ‘Ardfinnan ran a fine race until the last furlong.. The most likely runner to improve is the Gisborne representative Polar, a big four-year-old Polydamon gelding. He looked short of a gallop or two, but ran a great race, which, if it effects an improvement, should enable him to make a bold showing in his near engagements. Asleep ran a very fair race and the other Gisborne horse, Mangatoetoe, was conspicuous for early pace and a forward position at the finish. MANAWATU CUP.

Ngata, Enthusiasm, and Clarinda monopolised the betting in the Manawatu Cup, in which all 14 acceptors went to the post. It was a very tine contest, and produced an exciting finish between the favourites that got the big holiday crowd stirred to a high pitch. Clarinda got the last run from further back than Enthusiasm, and staying on she beat the other mare by a long head. Enthusiasm was conceding 131 b., and was responsible for a performance equal to her best, although she has won over the distance in much better time. Mr. R. A. McKenzie won this race last year with Clandhu. Ngata ran a great race. He pulled himself to the front about six furlongs from home, and although he was beaten at the distance he hung on grimly into third place. He was not as thoroughly wound up as his owner or trainer desired, as the liability to break down prevented a good preparatory gallop, and this probably cost him the race. Ngata is one of the great horses this country has produced, and unsound and aged as he is, he can still hold his own with the best. Merry Dav tailed off : as usual, but she was galloping brilliantly into fourth place at the finish. A longer straight and she would have I been very close to success. The first ■ time she' strikes a heavy track she ■ should be giving trouble. She is , looking particularly well at the present t time, Tanadeee got a very bad pasiwc, ite to tos saac.. was

making a nice run on the turn when he got stopped, and again at the top of the straight he met with severe interference, which almost knocked him over. Both incidents were pure accidents in the running, but it lost all chance of Tanadees filling a place. Tresham ran a very good race for a mile and a quarter. One of the best efforts of the race was that produced by the gallant Waetea. She disputed the lead with Ngata from the six furlong post onwards until they were caught, and finished gamely into fourth place. Olympic was prominent throughout, and finished sixth. Provided he races consistently be should be a winner shortly. There was good support for Kalakaua, and he ran a very creditable race, finishing on well. Kilfaire did not show much dash and Scotch Mixture looks a back number for the present at any rate. Agitato ran sensationally, bolting into the lead and off the course for the first six or seven furlongs, when he retired. Arch Salute looked really well, and on a track to suit his partiality for heavy going lie should race prominently. Birthmark was outclassed. NURSERY HANDICAP.

The Riccarton-trained Bank Note was much better fancied for the two-vear-old race than Note, on whom Mr Riddiford relied, scratching Spode. Kilperon, the other Trentham representative, was a good third choice. Bank Note showed early speed, but was found wanting at the business end of the race. Kilperon had every chance, but in the finish was decisively beaten by Nfcte, who has regained her spring form. Kilperon did not finish at all well, and cannot be right, for when he won at Wanganui in the spring he galloped most couragecuslv at the end of bis race. At tlie top'of the straight it was clear that Cotton thought he was on a good thing, and lie must have been surprised and chagrined at the ease with which Note gathered him up. The form of the others was poor. GIDLIES HANDICAP. In a good betting race for tlie hack sprint, the Waikato representative Pinon was favourite, and he ran a good race all the way, going down only in the last stride to Sleet, whose late form has been wonderfully consistent. Nadarino ran a very good race, and so did The Bolter, whose wind infirmity is the only thing between him and plentv of stake money. Polyphemus had no luck at the barrier, and was in the ruck all the way. He is looking well at the present time. _ The Te Arolia representative Constellation had none the best of luck in the running, but finished close up, and is worth noting for his immediate engagements. . lhe Tank ran very creditably, suggestive of early improvement, and races came from Adavale, Nine of Spades, and Lin Arlington. FITZHERBERT HANDICAP. The open sprint saw Peneus finish up a better favourite than Grand Knight, with good money for Orchid, and support for several others. Grand Knight has furnished into one of the greatest gallopers the New Zealand Turf has seen. He won going away, from a position so far back at the halfmile that a place, let alone a win, seemed an impossibility. One was prepared for Ins slow beginning, and also for his speed, but not for what he actually did show. The class of these English horses, once thev come right, is reallv remarkable. What would be have done to the Auckland Railway field under v 8.0? Shirley ran a very fine race, and is a dangerous candidate for future sprinting honours in firstclass comnanv. Peneus and Licinius raced well, but what under ordinary circumstances would have looked good was made second class by Grand Knight. Economist and Miss Egypt finished on well and should not be neglected in the future. Ilka and Orchid retired in the straight from prominent earlv positions, and so did Heisler, who has great pace, but is badly lacking in stamina. Good Sport ran a verv poor race, which cannot be accepted as form. Piquant played up at the post and got left. Beaumont ran a verv creditable race, and in weaker company should be hard to beat. Master O’Rourke, well back early, was finishing well. . GRANDSTAND HANDICAP. Martulla was the hottest favourite of the day in the concluding event, going well over £2OOO, as against £l4OO odd on Rouex, the second choice. Rotiex had every chance, being never further back than fourth or fifth, but he was soundly beaten into sixth place at the post, finishing behind one or two who were standing him up a lot of ground. On the other hand, the favourite Martulla got a shocking run in the early stages, and although she put in a brilliant run home she was too far out to reach a better placing than fourth. Martulla is very well at present, and should soon make amends. The race was won very decisively by Modern, who made her own running over the latter stages of the race, and held off some strenuous challenges. Degage finished resolutely into second place, but got there mainly through capable and courageous handling bv R. S. Bagby, who forced her through on the rails in excellent style. Bright Day is a useful performer from the Waikato, who ran a very creditable race, on which he will probably improve very shortly. White Comet ran a great race for just under a mile, when he was beaten by tlie length of the journey, and in finishing fifth he showed that a race over his right distance is well within his coinpass. Ring Potoa. and Fillctte ran verv well.
