RUAPEHU’S RECORD PASSAGE

THIRTY-SEVEN DAYS FROM SOUTHAMPTON

BIG LIST OF ASSISTED IMMIGRANTS

The New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Ruapehu, which arrived in the stream at Wellington from London and Southampton, via the Panama route, made the passage in the record time for her of 37 days from Southampton, averaging 13 knots throughout the voyage. Pratique was granted, and the ship berthed at the King’s Wharf about 6 o’clock last evening. The Ruapehu brought 76 saloon and 272 third-class passengers. Included in the latter are 262 “assisted" immigrants, who are booked as follow

Included in the above are 40 domestic servants and 10 public school boys. Excepting on December 23 and 24, when strong westerly winds and high seas were encountered, exceptionally fine weather was experienced. The passengers had a most enjoyable trip, and deck sports and games, a fancy dress ball, dances, and a Christmas tree added to the pleasure of all. On November .28 an assistant steward of the Ruapehu, Mr. Cecil Davison, aged 42 years, succumbed to heart failure. The deceased had been ailing for a few days. The body was. buried at sea with the customary obsequies.
