MANAWATU RACES

AN AVENUE OF MOTOR CARS.

Several hundred sportsmen missed the first two races at the Manawatu Club’s meeting on Saturday, when huge crowds rushed to the Awapuiu course from all parts of the Nort Island, using every possible means ci conveyance. Those who were wi»c enough to get away from town at all early hour certainly had the pest of it, while the late comers, who timed their arrival to coincide with the running of the first event, w'ere very much out of it. , , Although motor-cars are extremely popular in Palmerston North and the large district of which it is the centre, it is safe to sav that the number ot cars that travelled to Awapuni on Saturday constituted a record. Those who left the town about 11 a.m. were held up fullv a mile from the course, and it took a considerable time to clear the congestion of motor traffic. The long winding stream of cars extended almost half-way to Palmerston North during the lunch hour, and all narking places within the course were fully occupied. Before the me,eting was well under way cats lined both sides of the approaches for a considerable distance from the main gates. While the parking accommodation has generallv proved sufficient to meet the ordinary" needs of those who travel bv motor-car, the increasing popularity of the Manawatu Club’s meetings has brought about an immediate need forreorganising the accommodation, and controlling the huge volume of traffic.
