SEVERE EARTHQUAKE

BUILDING INJURED IN MASTERTON

CROCKERY ALSO BROKEN

Br TELEGitAFH.— I’rEss Association

Masterton, December 25,

An earthquake of unusual severity was experienced here yesterday at 3.40 p.ra. The shake was preceded by a pronounced rumbling for about ten seconds, and the tremor occupied five seconds, during which buildings rocked perilously. No serious damage is reported, the most severe sufferers apparently being the crockery shops, where the Christmas displays were disturbed. The town was full of Christmas shoppers, and many shops were quickly emptied, the severity of the tremor causing considerable alarm. Perry’s Buildings, a two-story concrete’ structure, which swayed treacherously’ throughout the shake, was cracked from the ton of the parapet down for about Bft. The shake is considered to be the most severe since 1912.

An earthquake of no great violence, but which lasted longer than usual, was felt in Wellington on Thursday afternoon at 3.50. A much smaller tremor occurred at 6.55 p.m. the same day.
