BURNED STEAMER
NEARLY ALL HANDS SAVED ONE LIFE LOST New York, November 18. The steamer Lenape earlv on Wednesday. off Lewis, Delaware, was being swept bv flames. Many passengers were taken off. but many were hanging over the bow bv ropes waiting for Iceboats. The liner was half consumed and filled. Rescue boats arc heading for shore. Whether there is anv loss of life is unknown. A later message from Cape May states that all the passengers of the burned steamer were rescued and proceeded to their destinations bv train. A. message from Lewis (Delaware) states that 36 passengers and crew from the Lenape were landed at daybreak. There were no fatalities. Oyer a dozen suffered from bruises, exposure, and burns. The burned hulk was scuttled two miles off shore. Later it was revealed that at least one life was lost. A man’s body was picked up off Lewis.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
