BETURNS Tn spite of the powerful backing of influential opinion and the wide recognition, enforced in a multitude of cases by gratifying experience of the benefits conferred’ on the community by the INunket system, the appeal to - thw general public for funds to strengthen the system by providing a Karitanc Hospital for Wellington has not mot with anything like a generous or widespread response. Granting the goodness of the Plunket system, it must be recognised that Wellington should not Ing behind the other centres by failing to .provide itself with the most powerful instrument in the Plunket armoury, a Karitane Hospital for special treatment and for training nurses. Yet only a few hundreds out of Wellington’s many thousands have contributed to the fund. l\ie desired total is ■£25.0(30, and over .£13.000 is available; and quite a small respanse widely spread through tho community would wine out the deficit.

The sale of Karitane bonds, by which it was hoped, with tho aid of the Boy Scouts as salesmen, to add £5OOO to tho fund, has progressed rather poorly, so far as can be judged by tho returns sent in. The following amounts have been reported for sales up to Wednesday night: Wellesley College Troop, £52 10s.; Lyall Bav, £l9 135.: St.' Paul’s Church,' £l7 19s. Gd.; Y.M.C.A., £l6 17s. 6d.; East Harbour. £lO.
