ARCHITECTURE AND COMMERCE
At the Rotary Club luncheon yestcr- • day, Professor C. R. Knight, of the Auckland University College School of ( Architecture, gave an address on "Architecture and Commerce.” He considered that architecture was the most useful of all -arts, especially from a utilitarian 'point of view. He showed how commence benefited by good architecture, and instanced the Woolworth building in New York as a combination > of the artistic and commercial benefit, a ease of spectacular beauty, and the maximum of - lottable space. He described the difference in Fifth Avenue, New York, from the time it consisted of brownstone residences, to the stately and glorious v business place which succeeded them as commercial enter- '' prise and artistic architecture combined to the best advantage. Reference was made to the establishment in Auckland of the University School of Architec- - jure for New Zealand, which he hoped would be patronised by students who would be the architects of to-morrow for the whole Dominion. (Applause.)
