Sir Heaton Rhodes, Minister of Defence and Commissioner of Forestry, left for Nelson yesterday,, mainly on forestry on the West Coast. He will probably inspect the Nelson College Cadets to-morrow during the competition for the Riddiford Cup. Sir John Findlay, K.C., and Lady Findlay returned to Wellington yesterday morning b}’ the Limited from Auckland. Mr. I. C. Rolleston, ALP., and Mrs. Rolleston arrived in Wellington yesterday afternoon from Frankton Junction. Colonel Burgess (Acting Commandant of the Forces), Major Henderson, and Captain Conway will leave for Nelson to-dav to judge the Nelson College Cadets in the Riddiford Cup competition. returning to Wellington to judge Scots College Cadets, and then going on to Auckland for a similar duty. Air. J. R. Olliver, formerly sub-editor of* the “N.Z. Referee,” has been appointed editor, on the retirement of Air. W H. Uristed, who has been connected wtih the "Weekly Press and Referee” for many years, n Air. Olliver has also a long tecord with the Christchurch “Press” Company, and is well known throughout New Zealand . in general as well as sporting journalism.

Rev. Father Carmine, of Tailiape, is amongst the visiting priests now in Wellington, and will be present at the Requiem Alass that is to be officiated at the Sacred Heart Church, Petone, to-dav to the memory of the late Rev. Father Alaplcs, who was at one time parish priest at Petone. A well-known resident of Palmerston North, Air. Julius Frederick William, died in a private hospital on Saturday morning in his 75th year. Born in Hamburg, Germany, the deceased came to the Alanawatu 50 years ago, and acquired land in what is now College Street West, which was then virgin bush. He built the first house in that locality, and for manv years carried on a successful business as a nurseryman, but retired on the death of his wife 17 vears ago. He served in the FrancoPrussian war, and received many decorations for his services to his native country. He leaves four sons and two daughters—Airs. 11. Langford and Airs. A. Ashton. Palmerston . North, Air. Charles William, of Warkworth, Alessrs. B. H. and A. 11. William, of Palmerston, and Air. William William, of Otahuhti. Air. Thomas R. Groom, a director of Alessrs. J. Sagar and Co., Ltd., woodworking machinery manufacturers, Halifax. England, is arriving bv the s.s. Tonic. He will tour the Dominion in company with the New Zealand agents for the firm (Alessrs. Aloss and Co.). Rev. R. 11. Catherwood, at present minister of the Kilbirnie-Lyall Bay Presbyterian Church, has accepted a call tc Turakina, and is to be inducted to the charge on December 16. The death of Air. H. A. Smith, Government Statistician of New South Wales, is announced by a Press Asso’ ciation message from Sydney.
