CONSPIRACY ALLEGED
TYPISTE AND SALESMAN IN COURT. Charged with having conspired with each other at Melbourne on October 10 to defraud Palmer and Co. of' A'Bo by false pretences. 1 ionol Vincent Gatis, a salesman (aged 38). and Elsie Florence G-ntlcs, a typiste (aged 24) appeared before Mr. E. Page, SAL, in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Chief-Detective Kemp l said he understood that an escort would be arriving from Melbourne- on November 23. and therefore asked for a remand until November 24.
The application was granted. Mr. F. B. Anyon. who appeared for both accused, made application for bail. He said that the female accused was well educated, and on account of her highly-strung disposition had felt her position greatly, and would do anything to gain her freedom. Tie understood that there was a substantial defence io the charge, and he accordingly made a strong plea that some consideration should be given to the prisoners. The accused would cable to Australia for money, if bail were granted. "The innocence or guilt of accused does not concern this Court," said the chief detective. "The male accused is a -manned pian with four•cliildri-n. and has a maintenance order out against him. The female prisoner is single, and came to Now Zealand under the name of Mrs. Gatis and made a falsi- declaration to the Customs authorities. That in itself is an offence. I submit that bail should be given sparingly, and, if granted, a substantial , sum should be fixed without any resort In sentiment.” "The application is principally for the female accused,” said the Magistrate, "and I will admit her to hail if she deposits J'JOfi hero. The other accused I won’t admit unless he firn’s a deposit of Jl3OO or a satisfactory bond of ,C 300.
