SONG RECITAL

PUPILS OF MR. LEN BARNES. Songsters well above the average quality helped to make the invitation song recital given by the students of Mr. Len Barnes a great success at. the Y.W.C.A. Hall on Saturday night, when many local singers scored well-merited ap?lause for their share of the programme. erhaps th u most successful item during the night was that of Mrs. Alice Harris, wl oso "Softly Awakes My Heart” not only had her repeatedly recalled, but at the same time stamped her as a. singer with a remarkably fine voice. Miss Dorothy Newman sang "Butterfly Wings" in a way that suggested this seveAteen-year-old girl will be capable of better things, while Miss Lily Mackie pleased with her rendering of "The Glory of the Sea.” Good work was also done by the Aeolian Quartet, who contributed many successful numbers, while the accompanist, Miss Muriel Smith, is worthy of mention for her very fine playing at the piano. Mr. Len Barnes is to be congratulated for bringing off such a recital which is not only dear to, all good lovers of local music but at the same time invaluable from the educational viewpoint of the musical student.
