NEW CONSTITUTION FOR PROTECTORATE
Cape Town, June 18.
A Bill for a new constitution for the South-West Protectorate provides for an Assembly' of eighteen members, six of whom are to be nominated by’ the Administrator. The subjects permanently reserved by’ the Union Government include Native Affairs, Railways, Harbours, the position of Union Public servants, Customs and Excise, the Judiciary, Posts fnd Telegraphs, Immigration, Banking and Currency, and Defence. Tile subjects temporarily reserved are Police, Civil Aviation, Education, and Land Settlement. Manhood suffrage for British subjects is provided.
The Union Government retains the right to veto any legislation. The Assembly will possess wide taxing powers. English and Dutch will be the official languages, but German will be permissible in the High Court.—Reuter.
