TARARUA TRAMPING CLUB
ANNUAL MEETING. A large number of members attended, the annual meeting of the >Tararua Tramping Club on Thursday. Mr. F. W. v'osseler presided. In proposing the adoption of the report and balance sheet, thb chairman said that members could <lo much to reserve native bush. Ho was in favour of the nationalisation of tho remaining iorests, such as Muymorn Estate, Williams Park, and tb.e bush at Ship Cove. The last-named place was of great historical interest, an.'S the one or two thousand acres leit were in great danger of being cut into by the owners. Mr. W. 11. Field, M.P., said that the authorities were waking up to the awful possibilities ol cutting timber on the watersheds of livers. Plantations of exotic trees were, ht said, exempt from taxation, but areas of native bush were taxed as if they were in grass. The result was. that owners of land could not afford to have native bush on their land. However, there was a prospect of legislation being introduced to alter it. The report and! balance-sheet were adopted. Amended rules and a resolution that the club be incorporated were passed. The election or officers resulted as follows: —President, Mr. F. W. Douglas-' . ± . , The meeting passed a. motiun suggesting that areas of native bush kept for scenic purposes be greed of taxation.
