NEW CITY COUNCIL

CHANCES IN THE PERSONNEL SOME OF THE CANDIDATES By this time the municipal electors know pretty well that they will have a duty to perform on Wednesday, April 29. On that day a new Mayor and council have to be elected to hold office for the ensuing two years. Changes in the personnel of the City Council are inevitable. There must be at least four changes next month, irrespective of the result of the poll, for Messrs. C. H. Chapman, G. Mitchell, and T. Forsyth are in the .Mayoralty lists, with, at present, no prospect of any one of them standing down. In addition to tfiese three, Councillor W. J. Gaudin is at present on his way to Rugland, having left no nomination paper behind him. The present Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright) has intimated that he will be a candidate for the City Council. All the other members of the council intend offering themselves for re-election. These are Mrs. McVicar, Messrs. H. D. Bennett, W. H. Bennett, W. J. Thompson, A. W. Parton, A. L. Monteith, B. G. 11. Burn, J. Burns, Al. F. Luckie, J. Aston, and F. Meadowcroft. At present there is some talk of the sitting members forming a ticket independent of any league, and going to the poll on. the result of the progress and policy of the council during the last two years. One member of the council, who is inclined to favour this proposal, said that whilst it was all very well for the public to criticise here and there—and such criticism may be healthy for the community—the present council had reason to be proud of the vast amount of useful work accomplished during its term of office. On these grounds he believed that a very good case for their continuation in office could be made out.

Outside the present members of the council who are allowing themselves to be nominated, and the Labour ticket, the only announcements so far for the C ity Council are Messrs. John Castle, J. D. Sievwright, and J. W. Salmon.
