— * MELROSE WANTS COURTS. In keeping with the rapid strides the game of lawn tennis is making in the city and. suburbs, Melrose is now desirous of obtaining courts. Mr. E H. Brooker waited upon the Reserves Committee of the City Council, and presented, a petition, signed by 71 members of the Melrose Ratepayers’ Association, praying the council to grant them a small area on the Town Belt in their district on which courts could he laid down. Councillor J". Thompson, chairman of the Reserves Committee, explained that the policy of the council was to lease areas to sports bodies, and let them form the grounds,, and do all the necessary work in making them ready for play. If Mr. Brooker wouldi forward an application to lease an area at Melrose to bo used as tennis courts, the Reserves Committee would consider it. DAVIS CUP BRITAIN V. BELGIUM MATCH POSTPONED. London, May 11. The first round match in the European zone contest for the Davis Cup, between Britain and Belgium, to have been commenced on Saturday, has been postponed until Monday.—Aus.-N.Z.
