FRENCH AND TURKS

TENSION ON SYRIAN FRONTIER FRANCE MAY DECIDE TO EVACUATE By Telegraph—Press Association. —Copyright. London, May 8. The “Daily Express” states that serious tension exists between the French and the Turks on the Syrian frontier, where the Turks have sent army corps, under Farred-din Pasha. The French bombing operations in Syria are more than a punitive expedition against brigands. Two French aeroplanes have been shot down by the Turks, and the French casualties nn recent weeks are estimated at 400.. It is reported that the Bavarian general, von Lossow, who was formerly an attache at Constantinople, is attending a council of war of German instructors, who are training the Turkish Army. The French have only three divisions in Syria, and General Weygand is urging that reinforcements be sent. M. Poincare and Marshal Foch oppose this, and would prefer to evacuate Syria. This would be a menace to Palestine The French have not yet ratified the Treaty of Lausanne. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. _____
