GENERAL ELECTION

“MAY BE FORCED ON HOUSE” PREMIER WILL ASSIST TO AVOID IT The suggestion of the Rev. J. Dawson (general secretary of the New Zealand Alliance) that a new roll should be prepared for the next election — made during an alliance interview with the Prime Minister yesterday—met with Mr. Massey’s approval. He remarked that it appealed to him, as it would enable starting with a clean roll every election, but it would entail an enormous amount of work.

“When we see how the House js going,” said Mr. Massey, “and /if there is to be a general election, we may see what can be done in that matter.”

Air. Massey remarked that the question of a general election did not rest with him. He was as strongly opposed to an election as anyone in the country, and if it was possible to avoid it, he was quite willing to assist in that direction, but an election might be forced on the House.
