The Prime Minister (Right Hon. W. F. Massey) left by the midday express yesterday for Auckland to take part in the welcome to the Special Service Squadron. His return is not anticipated in less than a week.

Sir Joseph Ward and Lady Ward left yesterday for Auckland. They are due back here next Tuesday morning. General Booth., of the Salvation Army, accompanied by Commandant and Mrs. Hoggard, and Colonel and Mrs. Henry, was a passenger by the Auckland express yesterday. General Booth will leave by the R.M.S. Niagara on Tuesday. Commandant Hoggard and Colonel Henry are due back in Wellington on Wednesday. Mr. Alfred E. Luttrell, one of the best-known figures in the building and contracting business of the Dominion, who died at Christchurch on Wednesday, was a partner in file firm of Luttrell Bros., builders, contractors, and architects, and had been in indifferent health for some time past, but lately entered a private hospital to undergo a very serious operation. From this he never recovered. Luttrell Bros, specialised ni the erection of racecourse buildings, and many of the large stands on courses throughout the Dominion were erected by the firm. The large stand at Biccarton was a notable example.. Mr. Luttrelli is survived by a widow and one son, Mr. E. E. Luttrell, well known as the secretary of the Canterbury Cricket Association: and one daughter, Mrs. Temple, who resides in Paris.

Mr. G. I. Beeson, accountant in tho district office of the Lands and Survey Department at 'Wellington, leaves this week for England., During his absence his duties will bo carried out bv Mr. F. R. Jamieson, district accountant at Invercargill. Advice has been received that Mr. Laurence Birks, Chief Electrical Engineer, who left Wellington recently to represent the Dominion at the World Power Conference in London, was obliged to seek medical advice on reaching Australia, and that as a result of an unfavourable report he is to return to New Zealand. New Zealand will be represented at the conference by Mr. Evan Parry, and by Sir James Allen, High Commissionei. Tile New Zealand superintendent for Messrs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd-, lias received cable advi<v that Mr. H. E. Davison has resigned his position as secretary to the company after over 50 years' tthrvice, and Mr. C. D. Mackintosh Gow has been appointed to fill his place. Mr. L. A. McAlister, who is severing his connection with the firm of Upton and Shearer to make an extended tour of Britain, was entertained by the members of the firm and employees last night, and presented witli a. case of pines and a travelling nig of New Zealand manufacture. Mr. W. G. Shearer paid a warm tribute to the wav in which Mr. McAlister had filled the position of factory foreman and wished, him success in his future career.
