RUHR MINES IDLE
MEN REFUSE TO WORK OVER 8 HOURS A DAY
EFFECT ON OTHER INDUSTRIES
(Rec. May 8, 9-50 p.m.) Berlin, May 7. Work in practically all the mines in the Ruhr is at a standstill, owing to the refusal of the men to work over eight hours daily, in accordance with the Government arbitration award. Eighty-five per cent, of the miners accordingly have been locked out. There is similar trouble in the Saxon and Upper Silesian coal regions. Thousands of metal workers and other industries are likely to be affected, as the Ruhr coal reserves are very small. —Reuter.
