A FINE CONCERT

H.M.6. HOOD’S ORCHESTRA AT TOWN HALL. Disguised as a fairy bower, the Town Hall yesterday afternoon offered a brilliant setting for ths elegant music that was supplied _ by the orchestra of H.M.S. Hood. ' Under the skilful control of Bandmaster Lodge, this wellbalanced! and highly-effi-cient orchestra presented a programme of music well worth a long tramp tc hear, and every number played showed a discreet artistry. and an entire absence of any striving for cheap effects away from the character of the music. Before the concert commenced the Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright) thanked Mr. Lodge (who is a warrant officer) and the members of tho orchestra for so kindly volunteering to give the public another hour’s entertainment before they left Wellingtoii. He was sure the offer was greatly appreciated by all present os was also the concert given in Oriental Bay on Sunday week last—(applause)—when the sum of £23 7s. was collected for the Residential Nurseries. The collection that afternoon would be for the Mothers’ Help Division of the Women's National Reserve. He hoped the collection would be a substantial one, as it was a good work. (Applause.) The programme commenced witß a spirited performance of the “Raymond” overture, always popular, and yet music of excellent quality, which brought out in fine relief the sound brass and woodivind sections. A rippling piccolo solo by Band-Cor-poral AfcConneU was so iddlighfully played that an encore had to be conceded Another rich treat was three nUcwements from “Othello" suite—two exquisite dance measures, and a very beautiful sotting of “Die Willow Song.” ‘ Aisha’ (an intermezzo by John Lindsoy) was played with great delicacv and charm, and finally the second "Hungarian Rhapsody” of Lis-t was given artistic treatment.
