SUCCESSFUL POLICE RAID
QUANTITY OF OPIUM FOUND Surprise visits paid to premises in Haining Street by Plain-clothes Constables Ambrose and Johnston on Tuesday afternoon and yesterday morning resulted in the recovery of a large quantity of opium and certain paraphernalia. Subsequently two Chinese, Loo Toe and Joo Yee, appeared before Mr. E. I’age, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court on a charge of being found in posesssion of a quantity of opium in a form suitable for smoking. Both accused were represented bv Mr. A. B. Sievwright, who applied for a remand until this morning. “I was only instructed ten minutes ago,” explained counsel.
The police offered no objection, and the application was approved. “May my clients bo allowed out on their own recognisances?” asked counsel.
His Worship: The trouble about Chinese is that sometimes thev are hard to find if they get away. I’ll fix bait at £50.”
