The Minister of Defence (Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes) will leave to-night for his home in Canterbury, for a perriod to be determined by his state of health. During his absence the portfolios he holds will be taken as follow: —Forestry, Sir Francis Bell; Defence. Hon. IV. D. Stewart; War Pensions, State Fire, Government Life Insurance, Superannuation, and Friendly Societies, Hon. J. G. Anderson .

Mr. Justice Sim arrived in Wellington yesterday from Christchurcli. Mr. Justice MacGregor will leave Wellington early next week to preside at the criminal sessions of the Supreme Court at New Plymouth.

Mr. Harold Carr, of Gisborne, is on a business visit to Wellington. The Rev. J. C. Abbott, 8.A., vicar of Shannon, who has been appointed to the euro of Terrace End!, Palmerston North, and Mrs. Abbott, received a farewell presentation at a largely attended gathering of tho parishioners.

Mr. H. O. Foot, passenger representative in New Zealand for the Cunard Steamship Company, will leave 'Wellington on Tuesday by the Maunganui for Sydney, to join the Cunard Company’s office in that city. Dr. Mercer, of the Health Depart ment. Napier, will leave 'Wellington for London on Sunday morning, bv the Port Pirie, as acting-ship’s surgeon.

Mr. Robert Darrorh, hon. secretary of the Wellington branch of the Navy League, will leave this morning for Auckland, in HALS. Hood.

The Mayor of Blenheim (Mr. E. S. Parker), accompanied by Mr. E. W. Rose, is to leave to-morrow morning on an extended visit to Canada. They are to catch the Niagara, leaving Auckland on Tuesday, and will be away for about four months.
