RHODESIAN ELECTION

GOVERNMENT’S POLICY SUPPORTED BUT MAY BE DEFEATED BY LABOUR Cape Town, April 28. A curious position prevails in Rhodesia, where the election campaign closes to-night. All shades of political opinion accept Sir Charles Coghlan and his programme. Labour, however, is disappointed at not reaching an agreement with the Rhodesian Party regarding the allocation of seats, and is attacking the Government violently, while the Independents, who profess complete agreement with the Premier and his programme, and who do not offer any alternative policy, are also contesting seats all along the line on the ground that good government can only be secured bv the return of a substantial Opposition. Therefore, with the exception of the Labour Party, the country is being asked to vote on the Government policy, whether it supports the official party nominees or the Independents. If Sir Charles Coghlan is not returned with a majority, and Labour and the Independents secure a majority, Labour will probably have to form a Ministry—a fact which does not appear to be appreciated by the Independents. —Reuter.
